Sylvan Lake News, May 28, 2010 - Beach volleyball league set to start in Sylvan by Carson Papke

A new beach volleyball league is starting in Sylvan Lake and there is still time to register as an individual or team. The league will run in conjunction with Alberta Volleyball Association (AVA) and start June 1 at the courts on the Sylvan Lake pier. Kim Reinhart, the local director for the league, felt Sylvan Lake was a natural fit for the sport. I always thought about why the beach volleyball courts were not getting used except for tournaments on the weekends and I felt the league would be a great fit for the community, said Reinhart. The league will run Tuesday and Thursday evenings from June until August. There will be divisions for two and four person teams. The two person team league will include men's and women's divisions and four person team leagues will be co-ed with at least two women on the court the whole time. Reinhart added that there will also be separate divisions for recreational and competitive teams. The league will be sanctioned by the AVA who are the facilitators of beach volleyball courts on the pier. Reinhart said the facility in Sylvan Lake is great and there has been a lot of interest in the league so far. We have had people from as far away as Leduc sign up for the league, said Reinhart. The courts are in such a great backdrop as they overlook the lake and people like being outdoors enjoying something fun like beach volleyball. They have close to 100 people already signed up. She added people can still sign up as an individual or as a team with the registration deadline today. Depending on room they will take people right up until the start of the season, she said. There is also an opportunity to add a youth division next year but they wanted to see how the adult league would work before adding another division. Registration is $200 for teams of two and each team of two is allowed a maximum of three players. Teams of four will cost $360 for the season with a maximum of eight players per team. Each team will be required to provide a $50 deposit as well to cover showing up at games and each team will receive the deposit back if they follow league rules. Equipment will be supplied including nets and volleyballs. Reinhart feels the league will be very popular in Sylvan Lake and has received great support from the town and AVA. Volleyball is a team sport that has a very fun and social aspect about it, she said. We want to involve the whole community as we know it will have a lot of things people will enjoy.
